SMPRC – December 19, 2016:
This is a bit of a “non-review” in a manor of speaking. To be a totally accurate review means my Bat-Safe would have to have been active in containing a Lipo fire, and I hope it never has to suffer such a fate. But I will say that first impressions of the unit in general are very positive. The appearance is very similar to an old style school lunch box as is the thickness of the steel stampings but I have no problem with that. My feeling is the materials used are perfectly selected for the job and expected stresses required to contain an angry Lipo battery. The insulation thickness in the walls and lid should be sufficient to contain any expected battery breach for at least one incident. No doubt you should either send your ‘used’ Bat-Safe back for inspection or replacement if a containment event has occurred. The entry/exit device for the charger and balancer lead pass-through was very cleverly designed. I was never clear on how it was configured until seeing it first hand. Now it makes perfect sense. There are two molded silicone pieces that when placed against each other form a plug the fits into the oval tunnel in the Bat-Safe lid. There are long tails that hang off the bottom of these rubber pieces that allow them to be grasped and pulled down (or up if you please) through that tunnel while the charging wires are sandwiched in the middle of the two pieces. Smart! The lid has its own rubber seal with which to help in the containment of hot gasses and I’d expect it to handle no more than one battery event. But it looks very easy to replace if damaged while the box is used in day-to-day charging operations. You should inspect the seal on a regular basis as its integrity is vital to the safe operation of the Bat-Safe. The latch for the lid is even well thought out as it has a spring that assures that it stays in the closed state and as long as the latch bail is placed over the lid hook you can be certain that the lid is secured and ready to protect you and your belongings.
Thank you Tom Mast and associates for providing this much-needed piece of safety equipment 🙂

This is a great product. It always felt risky charging three Lipo batteries in the living room. The thickness of the insulation is very reassuring. The handle location seems safe if I had to grab it and toss it in the backyard in a panic. The plug design should make it easy to insert cords even on a multi line setup. I’ll still need to test the ability to dissipate heat during routine charging using a wireless temperature probe.

After watching countless videos of LiPo safe bags shooting flames out of the seams, this Bat-Safe appears to be a well thought-out winner.
